That night, they ended up at Ground Zero, fighting the spate of fires that continued to burn in nearby buildings. He died Monday, May 4. He was 75. The cause was 9/11-related cancer, his family said. Tortorella, a more than 50-year volunteer, was a former captain in the department and had been named an honorary chief. A U.S. Army combat veteran, Tortorella had joined his brother and father in a plumbing business that later became Sound Shore Contracting. The Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department was the other Tortorella family business. ....

Police officers, as well as members from the Mamaroneck Fire Department, responded to 648 Shore Acres Drive on a report of a person trapped in a trench at the location, said Mamaroneck PD Chief Sandra DiRuzza. Upon arrival, the man was located in the rear of the residence trapped by dirt in a trench. Additional assistance was requested from New Rochelle Fire Department’s Collapse and Rescue Units, as well as Port Chester DPW, Mamaroneck EMS, and Larchmont VAC. ....
