A multinational law enforcement hacking operation disrupted the botnet infrastructure used to distribute the Qakbot trojan at the weekend, in a major setback for the cyber criminal underworld.
As well as shutting down the threat group’s infrastructure, the FBI-led sting remotely uninstalled Qakbot malware found on 700,000 computers.
"Operation Duck Hunt" is not likely to eliminate the initial access botnet forever, but the proactive removal of the malware from victim machines by law enforcement is one of the largest and most significant efforts of its kind.
U.S. officials said the Qakbot malware had enabled hundreds of millions in damages by supporting crime like ransomware
