Cape Town - Bystanders who turn a blind eye when acts of gender-based violence are committed in their neighbourhoods should do some introspection, Ilitha Labantu founder Mandisa Monakali said.
Monakali was speaking after Gugulethu civil society groups and the community congregated at the spot where the body of 48-year-old Brenda Mqela on Thursday, a daughter of Ilitha Labantu anti-GBV activist was found after she was killed allegedly by her 66- year-old boyfriend last week.
Family spokesperson Wam Mqela said the couple had an altercation and neighbours alerted the police after they heard screams coming from the house.

Cape Town – Gugulethu residents took to the streets yesterday, protesting against gender-based violence (GBV), which claimed 48-year-old Brenda Mqela as the area’s latest victim.
It was previously reported that Mqela died after dogs were set on her. It is now alleged that she was stabbed by her boyfriend, who owns dogs.
Mqela, the daughter of one of the founding members of women’s right advocacy group Ilitha Labantu, died at her boyfriend’s home.
Ilitha Labantu founder Mandisa Monakali said it was traumatising to hear stories of women being killed.

Cape Town - The fight against gender-based violence (GBV) in townships has received a boost with the reopening of the Ilitha Labantu’s Dorothy Zihlangu Transitional House in Langa on Tuesday.
The house, which has a capacity of 12 beds, recently underwent renovation and has been updated to accommodate the needs of survivors of GBV.
Ilitha Labantu director Ella Mangisa said the project took more than a year as they struggled to ensure that necessary funding was secured.
“The house was officially opened in 1998 after several years of intensive fundraising including several donations. During the establishment of this transitional house, there were limited shelters for abused women in the Western Cape and for us to have one in the township was significant.
