Ending. do you know someone that deserve this kind of recognition? please tell us about us. cnnheroes.com. in the search for flight 370, the it is a section find the pinger and find the black box. the problem, they could be nearly three miles down. tom foreman breaks down what we do and do not know about the bottom of the southern indian ocean. ed. reporter: more people have been to space than in the deep ocean. the search area for plane is quite deep. anywhere from 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 miles down. depending where you are in the big slope down here. that s deeper than the location of the titanic or where you would typically find nuclear subs or where giant squids may live. it is cold, just above freezing. completely dark. we don t know much about the ocean floor here. you might say why not just drop that robotic sonar imaging device and let it ride around and start mapping all of this? well, if you want the best ....

CNN New Day Saturday April 12, 2014 10:08:00

Hours there is no new ping, and let s say 36 days, the batteries on the pingers have expired. how long do you expect the wait before they will send down the blue fin with whatever area or whatever information they have because they don t expect the batteries to send out another signal? oh, i think they re already getting ready to do that. the united states sent a supply ship in, a logistics ship. they re getting stuff on site and ready to go. but remember, it takes a long time to get them ready to go and deploy them. according to the blue fin specs, it can cover 40 square miles a day on mapping, but they might have it go slower than that to get a clear picture on mapping. i think they re preparing to do that based on the logistics ship. again, i caution, there was a crash in the java sea a number ....

Might be that they re just the model they used for tracking the debris sin correct, and on flight 447 that s what happened. the model was incorrect. they spent several weeks looking for debris in the wrong area, so they didn t see anything there. in this case, yeah, it s strange to me that we haven t seen something. and, mary, if these pings are not that of the black boxes, what else would they be? well, there s lots of speculation and stories and, you know, basically, you know, citizen reports or fisher people reports that these pingers are used on fishing equipment, oceanographic equipment, you know, various mapping and other applications, and all sorts of equipment that goes into the ocean. however, i m a little skeptical about that, because if anybody had put in an oceanographic or fishing equipment in the area where they re searching for pingers and, a, didn t come forward and fess up, and say i put some fingers on fishing nets or oceanographic equipment, so ....

Sta state. we don t have the tools to do the job there is not a huge incentive to use those tools. let s talk about the pings they are detecting. the battery could die at any moment. should we switch to a visual search. which is why experts have been talking about using sonars. a couple of fields to the side. while you are mapping along. with the visual analogy. you have to remember that these vehicles are moving slowly. ....

Direction, wolf. why not send those robotic mapping devices down immediately to start looking around? precisely because they don t have all those other answers. when you bring in these features like the bluefin, for example, to start mapping down here, it helps if you have an idea where you re sending it because the closer it can be to the ocean floor, it s using side scan sonar, the better an image you can get. you don t want it right on the ocean floor. you re also functioning here kind of at the limits depending where you are. it s designed for 2 1/2 miles down, 25 hours at a time. using sonar acoustics to take images of the ocean floor. these are typically used at much more shall dow depths. to a degree, any time you put it this deep in the water, there s an experimental edge. you re trying something you haven t tried before. if you want higher quality images like some of the other types of sonar that work closer down here, then you need to know even more because then you re ta ....
