Highland Park agreed to settle a lawsuit brought by a couple whose building city officials seized in 2020, then offered to return in exchange for two new police cars, for $300,000.
The City of Highland Park will return a building it seized more than 16 months ago and later offered to return to its owners if they purchased the city two new police vehicles.
"It was a shakedown with a badge and a lawyer," said an attorney for the building's owners.
