While pockets of the nation were devastated by the late December cold front that enveloped much of the country and dipped into Mexico, it does not appear to have delivered a big blow to the supply-demand curve in terms of the fresh produce industry. At least that was the view from various industry members around the country.
Fresh Farms, a grower-shipper of Mexican produce items based in Rio Rico, AZ, is seeing light volumes on Bell peppers and sweet corn due to earlier weather in both the Florida and Mexico growing regions, but overall quality has been outstanding mostly in part due to more temperate growing conditions.
Halloween is fast approaching, but heavy rains caused a bit of a scare for pumpkin marketers who source from Mexico as the pumpkin crop got off to a late start. But Fresh Farms, based in Rio Rico, AZ, said the market has recovered nicely and quality is strong during this key promotional time. According to Marco Serrano, who is in sales at Fresh Farms, the pumpkin crop was delayed by around 10 days and there was some initial concern about how quality might be affected.
