K's lose to Nailers in game capped by fracas JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette About the closest thing you’ll find to a certainty in the ECHL is the Komets beating the Wheeling Nailers when they play at Memorial Coliseum. But tonight was the exception to the rule. The Nailers got a 4-3 victory over the Komets, who have won 20 of the last 24 games between the teams here. The waning seconds saw Wheeling’s Austin Fyten knee the Komets’ Anthony Petruzzelli, setting off a melee and likely putting him in the crosshairs of ECHL discipline. The Wheeling players then engaged in a shouting match with Fort Wayne fans and the Nailers’ Chad Duchesne swiped at a fan with his stick.

COHN | The Journal Gazette Shawn Szydlowski, in explaining why he had been benched for three games last weekend, said he had been so frustrated with his lack of production that he would grip his sticks so hard that they would break. Worse, he didn’t realize just how much his frustration was negatively affecting the rest of the team. “I would say I was reacting the wrong way to not having success” said Szydlowski, the Komets’ longtime star. “I’m used to having success here on this team and I just wasn’t having it. I think I was just putting too much pressure on myself at the end of the day.”
Apr 17, 2021 Former Nailer Hawkins' Hat Trick Propels Komets FORT WAYNE, IN- Brandon Hawkins scored lots of big goals for the Wheeling Nailers during the 2019-20 season, but on Friday night, he haunted his former club. Fort Wayne's leading scorer netted his second hat trick as part of a game-high 11-shot attack, as the Komets snapped Wheeling's six-game point streak with a 6-2 victory at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The Komets took a pair of leads in the first period, with a Wheeling goal sandwiched in the middle. The first goal came at the 4:11 mark, when the Nailers turned the puck over in their own zone and Brandon Hawkins immediately sniped a shot into the right side of the net. Wheeling drew even later in the stanza with a 4-on-4 tally, as Matt Alfaro broke in on the left side and whipped a shot through Louis-Phillip Guindon's legs. With 30 seconds remaining, Fort Wayne got its lead back with Hawkins' second of the night, as he clipped in a one-time feed from Randy Gazzola at the bottom of the left circle.

Everyone has something they can offer the community. That includes the players of the Fort Wayne Komets. On March 17, Prince Chapman Academy fifth-grade teacher Veronica Wilson and her class had the opportunity to have two players from the Fort Wayne Komets read to their class. The book they read was âBrady Brady and the MVPâ by Mary Shaw and Chuck Temple. The book series is based on Brady Shaw, a former Komets player. Komets players Anthony Petruzzelli and Marcus McIvor joined through a Zoom video to read to the class. They took turns reading and showing the students the pictures in the book.
