TAMPA — Maria Chapa Lopez, who has served as the U.S. Attorney for the Tampa-based Middle District of Florida since 2018, announced her resignation late Friday, along with other top federal prosecutors nationwide.
The move comes weeks after Acting Attorney General Monty Wilkinson asked all 56 U.S. Attorneys appointed by former President Donald Trump to resign. In recent years it has become common for U.S. Attorneys appointed by Republican or Democratic chief executives to resign when a president of the other party takes office. ....

A 40-year-old Tampa attorney has been indicted after being accused of traveling to Cambodia and sexually abusing four children.
TAMPA, FL A 40-year-old Tampa attorney has been indicted after being accused of traveling to Cambodia and sexually abusing four children.
United States Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez announced the indictment against Rugh James Cline Friday. He s charged with five counts of engaging in illicit sexual conduct in a foreign place and one count of possessing child exploitation materials.
If convicted, Cline faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in federal prison for each count of engaging in illicit sexual conduct and up to 20 years in prison for possessing child pornography. ....

The U.S. Department of Justice announced earlier this month that an Indian Rocks Beach, Florida-based woman has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and filing a false tax return. 
Kelly Wolfe and her company, Regency, Inc., have also agreed to pay up to $20.3 million to resolve allegations that they violated the False Claims Act.  
Among the allegations are that Wolfe and her conspirators submitted well over $400 million in illegal durable medical equipment claims to Medicare and the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans, relying on the guise of telemedicine to explain the unusually high volume of claims.   ....

Tampa, Florida - The United States filed a civil complaint seeking to permanently enjoin the owners of a Tampa-area clinic and pharmacy from unlawfully dispensing opioids and other controlled substances, the Department of Justice announced Friday.
In a complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, the government alleges that Dr. Tobias Bacaner, Theodore Ferguson II, and Timothy Ferguson used Paragon Community Healthcare Inc., to unlawfully issue controlled substance prescriptions, and Cobalt Pharmacy Inc., to unlawfully fill controlled substance prescriptions, all in violation of the Controlled Substances Act. The complaint alleges that the defendants ignored obvious signs of abuse or diversion when issuing and filling opioid prescriptions. The complaint also alleges that ....
