Finland's newest and biggest nuclear reactor, which has been beset by delays for decades, restarted electricity production on Thursday.
Finnish utility Teollisuuden Voima Oyj announced it has initiated an environmental impact assessment procedure for a possible operating licence extension and potential power uprating of units 1 and 2 at its Olkiluoto nuclear power plant.
Test production has been completed at the Olkiluoto 3 EPR in Finland and the plant has now started regular electricity production, operator Teollisuuden Voima Oyj has announced. TVO said the reactor will soon be declared to be in commercial operation.
The 1.6GW Olkiluoto 3 (OL3) nuclear reactor began producing electricity yesterday, 18 years after the project broke ground and €8bn over its original €3bn budget.
The nuclear facility's operator says it is aiming to produce 30% of Finland's electricity output in 2023, once the much-delayed Olkiluoto 3 begins full production.
