TO’HAJIILEE, NM — When the water pipeline to her community finally gets built, Shanna Chischilly won’t have to be so vigilant in making sure her 8-year-old daughter doesn’t get water in her mouth when she’s showering.
Construction will soon begin on a 7-mile pipeline that will deliver water from the Rio Grande to the small Navajo community of To’Hajiilee, where the water is so bad the local government has resorted to trucking in bottled water for residents.

Across the country, 49% of Native American homes lack access to reliable water sources, clean drinking water or basic sanitation. Homes in the Navajo town of To'hajiilee, just outside Albuquerque, are no exception. Taps run black with sediment and orange with rust, and nearly 2,000 residents rely on truckloads of water for drinking.
