Wildlife-rich UK Overseas Territory announces plans to protect all its land area
King penguins and glaciers (GSGSSI/PA) The entire land area of a remote UK overseas territory will be given protected status to conserve its rich wildlife, its government has said. The Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (GSGSSI) said it intends to designate the entire 3,800 square kilometre (nearly 1,500 square miles) landmass of the islands as terrestrial protected areas.
