McMorris, Gasser lead snowboard big air qualifying Sunday at world championships

Mark McMorris bounced back from his slopestyle shortcomings to make big air finals, while Anna Gasser led a strong contingent of women in Sunday’s qualifying ahead of the final events of the world championships at Buttermilk Ski Area in Aspen.
McMorris, the Canadian superstar and Winter X Games medals record holder, was among the biggest surprises to not have qualified for slopestyle finals earlier in the week, but scored 92.75 on the first of his two big air qualifying runs on a tricky jump Sunday to lead the men.

ASPEN — Like every contest since Shaun White’s Olympic win in 2018, the men’s snowboard halfpipe world championship came down to Japan’s Yuto Totsuka and Australia’s Scotty James. Everyone else is essentially riding for bronze these days, and the rest of the athletes understand this.
“It’s amazing,” Switzerland’s Jan Scherrer said of sharing the podium with Totsuka and James, “but on the other side I had two podiums last year, and I feel every time you make a podium it’s with them. So it’s not too special to be honest. It’s obviously special to be on the podium, but not when the other two guys are Yuto and Scotty.”

Chloe Kim wins again in Aspen halfpipe, defends her world championship crown

Even Chloe Kim is capable of a bad run from time to time. Hoping to finish with a bang Saturday, she came out sloppy on her third and final trip through the halfpipe and had to admit defeat a couple of hits in, easily the most disappointing run of her weekend.
It was just a victory lap, so not like it was the end of the world for the 20-year-old California superstar. Kim still won the women’s snowboard halfpipe contest at the world championships on Saturday at Buttermilk Ski Area in Aspen, successfully defending her title from two years ago in Utah.
