Professor Mark Jit from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences this year. Professor Jit, a professor of vaccine epidemiology and head of the department of infectious disease epidemiology, is one of 59 influential biomedical and health scientists who have been awarded the prestigious fellowship. Mathematical modelling played a key role in our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, both in the UK and around the world. Models were used to understand the health and economic consequences of COVID-19 and related interventions, in order to guide policy options. In this talk, we will hear the story of the role that LSHTM modellers played in the pandemic, including how they interacted with policy-makers and the media, and what lessons we can draw for the use of modelling in future global infectious disease emergencies.
