Gov. Greg Abbott and his Democratic opponent, Beto O’Rourke, have agreed to a Sept. 30 debate in the Rio Grande Valley.
The ad is based on O’Rourke’s 2020 comments that he appreciates protesters bringing up defunding certain line items “that have overmilitarized our police.” But at recent town hall meetings, O’Rourke has said he does not support defunding the police.
The Democrat also announced Thursday that he has accepted invitations to four townhall-style debates while Gov. Greg Abbott agreed to only one debate.
O’Rourke wants more debates, but Abbott has indicated this is the only one he is willing to do before the November election.
The Texas governor's race just might come down to Greg Abbott’s ability to pull in votes from bright-red small towns instead of Beto O'Rourke.
