Death Cab for Cutie’s "Transatlanticism" and The Postal Service’s "Give Up" have both turned 20 this year and as both bands are fronted by Ben Gibbard they have been on a joint tour where they perform both albums in their entirety. In honor of all this, Car Seat Headrest (aka Will Toledo and band) have covered "Transatlanticism" track “We Looked Like Giants” and The Beths have covered "Give Up" song “Brand New Colony.” The covers form a double A-side single for Sub Pop.
Welcome to the 32nd Songs of the Week of 2023. This week Caleb Campbell, Mark Moody, Scott Dransfield, and Stephen Humphires all helped me decide what should make the list. It was a quiet week for new tracks, so we settled on a Top 7.
Late night TV finally returned this week, following the end of the writers’ strike, and one of the first musical guests was boygenius, who performed “Cool About It” last night on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert." The supergroup featuring Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Phoebe Bridgers performed the song acoustically, all huddled around the same microphone, and it was an intimate and special performance.
