UK Professor Discovers Letter Between Storied American Playwrights Tennessee Williams, Eugene O'Neill


LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 6, 2021)
American theatre researchers will benefit from the major discovery of correspondence between two of the nation’s most storied playwrights Tennessee Williams and Eugene O’Neill. University of Kentucky Professor Herman Daniel Farrell III, a playwright and noted O’Neill scholar, found the letter while doing research in the archives at Yale University. 
The newly discovered letter gives readers an idea of the impact the two celebrated artists had on the other. The correspondence, penned by the critically acclaimed Williams in 1945   not long after the success of his work The Glass Menagerie  speaks to his appreciation of a new work of Nobel Prize laureate O’Neill The Iceman Cometh. Williams’ letter expressed admiration for O’Neill’s play describing it as “an unique dramatic achievement.”   ....

The science of health care and the cultural benefits of the arts have been inextricably tied for James C. Norton, professor in the University of Kentucky Department of Psychiatry and now semi-retired. That explains his generous gifts to both the UK College of Fine Arts and UK’s Center for Interprofessional Health Education.
Norton has enjoyed a long and fruitful career of nearly 50 years at UK in several different capacities. Scholarship Honoring Alum Wayland Rogers to Support UK Art Song Students

The University of Kentucky’s College of Fine Arts and School of Music announced the creation of the Wayland Rogers Scholarship for Excellence in the Performance of Art Song.
The Rogers Scholarship was established by distinguished alumnus Wayland D. Rogers, a renowned singer, conductor, teacher and composer based in Chicago, Illinois, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music from UK in 1963. The scholarship will support senior music performance students who exhibit excellence in art songs or solo music with piano accompaniment.  
Rogers, who was originally from Wayne County, Kentucky, held numerous faculty appointments at Northwestern University, Western Kentucky University, Loyola University Chicago, DePaul University, and the Music Institute of Chicago, served as artistic director and conductor of The Camerata Singers of Lake Forest, and served as music director of North Shore Unitarian Church in Deerf ....
