Coming off an Olympic-best time in their semifinal, Carrington and Regal were clear victors in a time of 1:35.785, ahead of Poland and Hungary. The previous world’s best time was 1:37.071 set by an Austrian duo in 2011. That was despite it being Carrington's fourth race of the day at the Sea Forest Waterway in just more than three hours. It was Regal's first Olympic medal – the 29-year-old made her Olympic debut in 2016 when part of the NZ crew which finished fifth in the K4 500.
