For Maruska Buttigieg Gili, Chief Risk Officer at BNF Bank, female representation in the financial services sector is growing. “There has been significant effort and investment in attracting more women to financial services and in developing more of them into leaders. Financial services corporations are moving towards gender balance – and this requires unflinching structural solutions and more thoughtful underlying cultural change. “I believe there are more women working in financial services, however still in relatively junior roles – there is still a substantial lack of women representation in general, especially at senior level,” she adds.
Representatives from the Malta Institute of Accountants and the Malta Banking Association highlighted the main concerns encountered by corporate services providers (CSPs) acting on behalf of clients, in on online discussion held on February 1. The webinar explored the theme of ‘Topical Issues affecting Banks and Practitioners’ and identified the major stumbling blocks that often lead to a longer process following requests to open a new bank account. The event provided a platform for members of the MBA and the MIA to bridge information gaps between banks and CSPs on matters such as risk appetite, new banking relationships and trust between actors.
The risk-based approach adopted by banks towards trusts and foundations was discussed in detail during FinanceMalta’s first webinar of 2021. Titled ‘Banks in Malta: Dealing with Trusts and Foundations’, the event was targeted primarily at legal and compliance officers working with banks in Malta. The objective was to provide a better understanding of these structured entities, how they are regulated and accepted by banks as their customers. The need for the webinar was brought up during the meetings of the Banking Committee, an initiative spearheaded by FinanceMalta in 2020 to address the issues experienced by financial services practitioners when liaising with banks in Malta. The Banking Committee comprises all stakeholders, including the Malta Bankers’ Association (MBA), the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA), the Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit (FIAU), the Institute of Financial Services Practitioners (IFSP), the Central Bank of Malta, Malta Enterprise, the Malta Institute of Accountants, the Chamber of SMEs and the Ministry for Finance and Employment.
