Howard Johnson's musical journey; Massillon native to great heights
The Independent Howard Johnson made a name for himself as a versatile musician from 13th Street in Massillon to "Sesame Street" to 30 Rock and beyond. The 1958 Washington High graduate was self-taught and performed alongside jazz greats. He wrote and arranged music for top acts such as John Lennon and led tuba ensembles that showcased the cumbersome instrument. In 1975, he was tapped to lead the house band of the new late-night comedy show "NBC's Saturday Night," known now as "Saturday Night Live." Johnson, 79, died Jan. 11 at his home in Harlem after a long-time decline in health. ...
