ELYRIA, Ohio – Julie Chase-Morefield was thrilled when she heard the news in late December that her nonprofit, Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio, would soon receive a share of $4.6 million from Lorain County, after her agency had supported the community through a year like none in recent history.
In 2020, while the pandemic raged on, Second Harvest had provided food for 154,000 people — nearly twice the number the organization had served the year before. That’s about a third of the population in its service region, Chase-Morefield told me. With the $236,000, Second Harvest had planned to set up more drive-through distribution sites in underserved areas and help its partner pantries expand capacity with more food, shelving and cold storage.
