From Pflugerville to Smithville, why voting in local elections matters
David Aguirre, a retired Target store director who was appointed to fill the vacant Place 1 seat on the Pflugerville school board was sworn in Thursday night. It was an ending and a beginning, Aguirre told the Pflag. It was the end of a campaign that started back in February, the beginning to start to serve by doing my best to do what is right for the students and educators in our community.
Aguirre finished with 2,968 votes (50.03%) to Marc Garcia s 2,965 (49.97%) a week after the May 1 election. It was a nail-biting game, Aguirre said. The fact that nearly 6,000 people voted and it was exciting to have ended by winning such a close race with a three-vote difference.

Champagne, Spradley keep seats on Eanes school board
Incumbents Jennifer Champagne, Place 5, and James Spradley, Place 4, will keep their seats on the Eanes school board after a very contentious and expensive election.
Final results from the county show Champagne with 54.5% of the votes in her race against opponent Jennifer Stevens. Spradley led challenger Nigel Stout with 55.5% of the vote.
About 10,400 votes were cast in each race, including about 7,400 early ballots cast in person. These numbers are significantly higher than previous spring elections in Eanes in 2019 closer to 2,700 people voted for school board races in May.
The Pflugerville ISD board of trustees formally called for an election in Ma, following Place 1 trustee Mary Kimmins Jan. 21 announcement she would not seek re-election.
The May election, scheduled for May 1, will include candidates vying for Places 1 and 2. Place 2 is currently held by trustee Tony Hanson.
Kimmins has served on the board since 2015 and previously served as vice president of the board. She currently serves as an educational consultant partner with LCM Consulting LLC and has over 30 years of experience in educational service. Anyone interested in serving the district, this is a serving board, Kimmins said following her announcement. Everybody here cares about this district, cares about the kids and the staff, and so I just want to say that Place 1 will be open.”
