Students take to streets over delayed NSFAS payments

Delayed NSFAS payments have angered a group of Walter Sisulu University students, who closed off a part of Oxford Street on Tuesday morning to show their desperation. Students have blamed NSFAS’s new payment system for months of non-payments, while others received an October monthly meal allowance of R825 instead of R1,650. The SRC has promised to continue the protest until students are paid what is due.

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) has shut down its campuses indefinitely following continued student protests.
In a statement on Tuesday, the university said at least four of its campuses had been disrupted by student protests.
"Management requests calm and order on all campuses and for students to use the open channels of communication and engage management. WSU condemns the damage caused by some striking students," said the university.

The university said student leadership had delivered a memorandum regarding NSFAS allowances, registration and financial exclusion.
At the beginning of the month, when the South African Union of Students (SAUS) announced that the national shutdown over fees had ended, a student representative from WSU, Masixole Mabhongo, said they were still having issues with NSFAS funding and academic transcripts.
