Global nuclear stockpiles set to rise as tensions increase, says watchdog
The decline in nuclear weapon stockpiles seen since the Cold War is most likely coming to an end, an international arms research group said in a new report that noted the war in Ukraine as a factor.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute says the world's nuclear arsenal is expected to grow in the coming decades due to modernization programs by the nine nuclear-powered states -- Russia, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France, India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea.
The nine nuclear-armed states, including the United States and Russia, are likely to grow and modernize their arsenal of warheads and to be more vocal about it in the coming decade in what is seen as a "worrying trend," an influential think tank says in its latest annual study.
