NASAs goal of returning humans to the moon by 2024 at risk due to extreme space weather

Astronomers studied over 150 years of space weather and solar storm activity  They looked for patterns in the timings of some of the most extreme solar events The sun operates in an 11 year cycle going from solar minimum to maximum  During this cycle the sun's magnetic north and south poles switch places We are currently early in Cycle 25, which started in December 2019, say NASA  The team found extreme events are more common early in even numbered cycles and that they are more common later in odd numbered solar cycles

Solar Orbiter records first footage of powerful eruptions on the sun

The UK-built Solar Orbiter has recorded the world’s first video showing powerful eruptions from the sun. These events, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are eruptions near the sun’s surface that blast out into the solar system. They have the potential to trigger space weather that can interfere with satellites and power grids on Earth, and can be harmful to unprotected astronauts. Chris Castelli, director of programmes at the UK Space Agency, said: “Coronal Mass Ejections can cause Geomagnetic Storms on Earth, which can disrupt power grids and the satellites we rely on for things ...

Lagrangey McLagrangeFace? ESA is letting the public name its new spacecraft

The European Space Agency (ESA) is calling on the public to rename its Lagrange spacecraft, which will spot potentially hazardous solar storms from the Sun before they reach Earth.   The new space weather mission will keep constant watch over our 'unpredictable and often unruly' star, sending back a steady stream of data to ESA.  Suggestions for the satellite's name can be made from now until October 17 on the ESA's website, and the winner will get a 'nifty prize', the space agency says.   Someone has already suggested 'Lagrangey McLagrangeFace' in reference to Boaty McBoatface, the publ...
