So the second dose is really not a booster. it is like a second dose series. we re learning more and we have to adapt as the data comes out. is it your view that mixing and matching is okay? i think we need to wait to see a little more data here before we make that determ determination. there is some mixing and matching that will be more robust, but we still need more to know what the impact of that will be clinically. our goal should not be just temporarily boosting antibodies. and we still don t quite have the data there, but i think we will see that unfold in the next couple weeks and months and this will help us as to what is the best booster compared to what ....

Discussions today and what that will likely lead to? yeah, i ll admit you kind of gave me flashbacks there, i spent two months in guinea in the ebola, and questions about mix and match with different vaccines as well as needing additional doses, you know, i think if you look at all the vaccines that we have, there is only one vaccine where we give a single dose. that is the yellow fever vaccine. every other vaccine is given as two, three, four doses, and so many of us anticipated that you would really need to give multiple doses. with respect to mixing and matching, you know, one way to think about it is like a mug shot, and with one kind of vaccine, you get the face front on, with another kind of vaccine, you get the profile, and if you have both pictures, you re able to recognize that person that much better, and it s a little bit like that with these mixing and matching of vaccines where your immune system is trained in different ....

CNN CNN Newsroom With Jim Acosta October 16, 2021 21:18:00

But do you think we ll get clearer guidance on this mixing and matching of vaccines because everybody is asking that question these days. well, jim, you re exactly right. everybody is asking that question and it s a good question and i hope dr. collins is right, that within about a week, week and a half, we will have a definitive answer on that question. i sure wish we had it today. the data look good to me. as they do to dr. collins and i would hope that mixing and matching will be a recommendation shortly, but let s let the process work out. these critical advisory committees that look at that, let them have a careful look at the data then we can talk to the american public with great clarity and assurance. right. and considering the efficacy rates of pfizer and moderna, here s another question i think people are going to be asking and that is do you think jnj should be an option anymore? i suppose what we re just hearing now from these experts ....

That will fall to the cdc director to endorse that recommendation or not. so i suspect probably by late next week there will be boosters for moderna and johnson & johnson being implemented. let s talk about mixing and matching. a lot of people are probably hearing this johnson & johnson news saying wait, j&j is supposedly not as effective, do i need to get pfizer or moderna for my booster. the study that says mixing and matching is safe and effective hasn t been peer reviewed. where do you stand on this issue? it s an interesting concept. there s a lot of merit to thinking about vaccinating with a type of vaccine using a different technology. there is data to show this may be something that s more effective and something that may be become part of our strategies to deal with covid in the future. i don t think there s enough data to know how safe this is and how effective it is and we want to get it all right before this is implemented. this is something that will probably progress ....

Respect to our current pandemic and questions about mix and matching vaccines as well as needing additional doses, i think if you look at all the vaccines that we have, there s only one vaccine where we give a single dose, that is the yellow fever vaccine, every other vaccine is given two, three, four doses, and so many of us anticipated that we needed to give multiple doses. with respect to mixing and matching, one way to think about it is like a mugshot, and with one kind of vaccine you get the face front on, with another one you get the profile and if you have both pictures you are able to recognize that person that much better, it s a little bit like that with these mixing in matching of vaccines where your immune system is trained in different ways to recognize the virus. i guess the issue is that dealing with some vaccine ....
