CAMPAIGNERS battling for anti-speeding measures near a busy school have expressed their delight after Barnsley Council’s highways bosses announced 20mph warning signs will be installed by the summer.
Members of Speed Awareness Group Ardsley (SAGA) formed three years ago as a result of witnessing frequent near-misses on Doncaster Road, which has a 40mph limit.
Although the road’s speed camera has been decommissioned and will be removed due to a low strike rate - despite campaigners claiming cars have been spotted driving at twice the limit - nearby Oakhill Primary School will receive a ‘much-needed’ intervention.
It’s also been confirmed that mobile speed operations - carried out by South Yorkshire Police - will also step up on Doncaster Road. ....

Pop-up town centre bar irks pub landlords

LANDLORDS have called Barnsley’s hosting of a five-day pop-up bar - as they struggle to return to normality - ‘absolute nonsense’.
The May bank holiday weekend saw the Kubz Tipi Bar set up in Mandela Gardens, on Hanson Street, which organisers say brought in 3,000 visitors.
But venue owners have concerns over the organisation of the event - which has been confirmed to be returning for four days from Thursday.
Dave Clayton, who runs Soho Music Institute, said: “It’s a little bit insensitive to set up a rival company down the road from somewhere that’s been closed for 12 months, that’s got to trade sub-profitably to get around the Covid arrangements. ....

Fury over new parking charges

HOYLAND councillors have been left ‘disgusted’ and ‘appalled’ at the decision for an outside firm to implement new parking charges at two car parks in the town centre.
The car parks, next to the market and B and M, have recently started charging - and they’re owned by Resilienti, which has asked Enterprise Parking Solutions to manage the sites.
The site next to the market is pay on entry, and the B and M site is free for the first hour - but two local councillors admitted they had no idea of the introduction of the charges.
Coun Robin Franklin told the Chronicle: “We’re all very disappointed especially considering the timing of it all - they’re just doing it for money. ....
