On Wednesday, rainbow-colored flags were hoisted outside homes, businesses and churches for the start of Pride Month to celebrate the LGBTQ community in the suburbs and beyond. The flag also went up at some government-owned properties, including village halls, parks and libraries -- some being raised there for the first time.

Updated 5/27/2021 5:35 PM Arlington Heights, Barrington and Elk Grove Village are the latest Northwest suburbs to issue proclamations ahead of Pride month in June. Arlington Heights Mayor Tom Hayes said Thursday that the village board came to consensus on a draft proclamation that will be released on the village's social media channels Friday. Hayes plans to read the proclamation at the next board meeting June 7.

Updated 4/19/2021 12:28 PM The race for mayor in Des Plaines was an expensive one, with all three candidates building five-figure war chests for signs, mailers and other campaign needs. Ultimately, the candidate who raised the most money in the three months leading up to Election Day -- 8th Ward Alderman Andrew Goczkowski -- came out on top, state records show.
Candidates for local, county or state offices who raise or spend at least $5,000 must file quarterly financial disclosure reports with the Illinois State Board of Elections. They must also file individual reports for donations of $1,000 or more as they come in.

Updated 4/9/2021 12:59 PM Des Plaines Mayor Matthew Bogusz touted the city's financial stability and private economic growth in a State of the City video released Friday. The presentation may well be Bogusz's last significant public address, as he's set to leave office in early May after eight years as mayor and four as a city council member.
The 18-minute video was filmed entirely within the Des Plaines Theatre, the once-decrepit landmark the city bought in 2018 and spent millions to refurbish. It's set to reopen to the public this year.
