Chico State announced Tuesday that it will be holding a free on-campus COVID-19 vaccination clinic from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 11 in Shurmer Gym for students, faculty and staff. In an email, President Gayle Hutchinson said participants will have the option to choose the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Students who chose Pfizer can return June 1 for the second dose. Students can sign up for the vaccine at this link. There will be no cost to get vaccinated and free parking is available in the stadium parking lot one-fourth of amile north of the gym off Warner Street. ....
On April 9, Chico State announced that it plans to hold multiple in-person commencement ceremonies for the class of 2020 and 2021. The class of 2020 will have their ceremony on May 16, 2021 at University Stadium and ceremonies for the class of 2021 will take place May 20-23, 2021. In the announcement, Chico State said that the in-person ceremonies will be available to graduates only and that family and friends will be able to watch via a livestream. The schedule for the virtual ceremony and the in-person ceremony will be released on April 15. Chico State encourages family, friends and parents to refrain from traveling to Chico for graduation. ....
Over the past year, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been caught up in a recall effort to get him out of Sacramento. The initiative is being led by the Republican National Committee, the California Republican Party and members of the GOP. Recall supporters have submitted an estimated 2.1 million signatures, well over the 1.5 million votes needed to get this on the ballot. This is the sixth attempt at recalling Newsom. What is a recall? A recall is a mechanism of direct democracy that allows constituents to strip power from an elected official by vote. Californians amended the state constitution for this purpose in 1911, outlining the Golden State’s procedures for this mechanism. ....
The Butte County Health Department announced Wednesday that it will turn Chico State’s Shurmer Gymnasium into a COVID-19 testing site starting March 4. The health department has teamed up with Chico State to operate a clinic in the gym two days a week. Appointments will be available Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. “Providing enough COVID-19 testing is just one way we can all help to monitor the coronavirus,” according to a press release quoting Mike Guzzi, associate vice president of Chico State Facilities and Capital Projects. “With the existing infrastructure of Shurmer Gym already in place, Chico State is proud to be able to offer another testing option for the entire Chico community and to do its part in helping to stop the spread.” ....
