Council seeks park input

Councilmember Gary Sonnen brought an early concept design for a city park during the Wednesday council session. The park is slated to be located right behind city hall and other city facilities on the corner of Hanley Avenue and 4th Street.
He said the park idea was brought forward by the previous city council, and the plan is to use ARPA funds to pay for it. Sonnen also said the city can possibly get additional funding through grants if any are available.

HAMDEN — At $19,021 per person, Hamden had more debt per capita during the 2019 fiscal year than any other Connecticut municipality, a new state report says.
That’s some $2,500 more than New Haven, the second-most indebted municipality at $16,513 per person, according to the data. The list is part of an annual Municipal Fiscal Indicators report released by the Office of Policy Management.
Scott Jackson, Hamden’s former mayor and current finance director, said historical underfunding of the town’s pension plan is a big contributor to its current debt.

HAMDEN — The town has released its $75,000 settlement agreement with an unarmed man who was shot at by a police officer last year.
The town released the document only after the New Haven Register filed a Freedom of Information request.
Paul Witherspoon III will receive $75,000 as a result of the Apr. 16, 2019, incident during which Hamden Officer Devin Eaton, who had been investigating a report of an alleged armed robbery, fired 13 shots toward Witherspoon’s vehicle, which was stopped on Argyle Street in New Haven.
