Oshawa continues to set building records Posted on June 9, 2021 by oshawaexpress in CITY, NEWS Construction value issued in Oshawa continues to increase, with the city setting three building records for the months of April and May 2021. Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter says Oshawa’s surge in building permits represents a large number of commercial, industrial and residential developments across the city. “We smashed three more building records in April and May,” he says. “A positive indicator that our city is on track for another successful year, despite COVID-19.” The city issued 370 building permits in April for a total of almost $107.5 million in construction value – surpassing the record of 276 set in 2015.

City supports bringing high-speed Internet to underserved areas of Oshawa Posted on May 11, 2021 by oshawaexpress in BUSINESS, CITY, NEWS The City of Oshawa is supporting an application from Rogers Communications for federal funding to bring high-speed Internet to some areas of Oshawa. Rogers has submitted an application under the Federal Government’s $1.75 billion Universal Broadband Fund to connect eligible homes and businesses in Oshawa to Rogers’ high-speed Internet network. According to the city, the households are primarily in the rural areas of Oshawa, and the application would also see connection for businesses in the Northwood Business Park. The City says there are no associated costs to the municipality of community members in connection with the application.

Oshawa CMA anticipates major GDP growth in city Posted on April 20, 2021 by oshawaexpress in BUSINESS, CITY, NEWS Oshawa is expected to see a rebound in gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the Oshawa Census Metropolitan Area (CMA). The Conference Board of Canada is anticipating GDP growth of 5.2 per cent this year, and 4.7 per cent in 2022, according to the Winter 2021 Major City Insights Report. The report also anticipates that manufacturing output in the Oshawa area will rebound by 8.2 per cent in 2021 and 8.5 per cent in 2022, while construction output will rebound by 6.8 per cent in 2021 and 4.3 per cent in 2022. Regional and City Councillor Tito-Dante Marimpitri, chair of the development services committee, says this is positive news for Oshawa that points to solid job and growth projections in the community.
