sandra: fox news alert on the shutdown of the government. the stand-off continues as we await a key briefing at the white house hours from now. welcome back to america s newsroom, i m sandra smith. jon: i m jon scott in for bill hemmer today. president trump could be open to a deal inviting congressional leaders to a white house meeting on border security. the first time democrats will sit down with the president since the shutdown began two weeks ago as they prepare to take control of the house of representatives tomorrow, and pass a spending bill that would reopen the government without any funding for the wall. white house correspondent kevin corke live with more now. good morning, great to be with you and happy new year to you and yours. now, the white house wants to work out a deal to end this government shutdown. democrats want to work out a deal to end the shutdown. the problem is border wall funding and why they re at the white house today and talking about it later on ....
Agreed upon on both sides of the aisle. a wall is very different than not just fencing. cybersecurity and more border patrol agents. it doesn t address the big problem. i think democrats have to address and that is comprehensive immigration reform. a wall isn t going to do that. fixing a fence isn t going to do that. it s beyond security. i agree with him what will happen in that meeting we have to do something and come to a deal. this is where i m at, where are you at and why they re having it in the situation room so cameras aren t rolling. sandra: can the two sides come together this afternoon? i m sorry for the inconveniences for the federal work workers who are out. i don t know how much longer the american public will feel as i do and have patience for a shutdown, a partial government shutdown. the bottom line is $5 billion. the democrats and republicans just agreed to spend $867 ....
Obstruction over the security of our country. there has been no better example of that than the current partial government shutdown. joining us now is former congressman matt gaetz who serves on the judiciary committee. what are your expectations for the meeting today and how much would you like to see the president negotiate? i know the president is negotiating on behalf of the regular folks in this country who want safe streets, rising wages and who want to know we ve got a nation of laws and respecting our border. my hope is that the nature of that negotiation will take the form of the framework that senator lindsey graham laid out where we could get $5 billion for a physical barrier, we could enhance other elements of border security and perhaps we can weave in elements of a tps solution for people who are here from oftentimes war-torn countries and maybe the bridge act that doesn t provide amnesty or a path to citizenship for those impacted by daca decisions but provide temporar ....
