The Texas House preliminarily approved a bill that would lower the criminal penalty for possessing small amounts of marijuana and provide a path for many Texans charged with such a crime to expunge it from their criminal records. The bill applies to possession of 1 ounce or less.

Faculty Senate expresses support for cheer team, caregivers

Faculty Senate passed legislation supporting faculty oversight of the University’s investigations into allegations of racism and sexism on the cheerleading team. Senators also endorsed a letter to address the pandemic’s disproportionate impact on caregivers.
The legislation calls on the University to incorporate input from the Faculty Senate, update the Faculty Senate Executive Committee quarterly about the status of the review and ensure effective oversight of and a safe environment for the cheer team.
History Prof. David Schoenbrun, one of the legislation’s authors, said the legislation intends to give the Faculty Senate influence over the University’s actions.

Feinberg researchers find COVID-19 strain from Brazil in Chicago

Feinberg researchers find COVID-19 strain from Brazil in Chicago
Illinois’ first known case of the COVID-19 variant first detected in travelers from Brazil was found last week by researchers at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine.
Feinberg’s Pathogen Genomics research team identified the strain through sequencing analysis of a COVID-19 specimen, which confirmed it as the P.1 variant first identified in the United States in late January in Minnesota. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, the individual — who did not report having traveled out of state — has been contacted and notified.
Some research has suggested the P.1 variant is more infectious and may be more resistant to vaccine antibodies, but the IDPH cautioned that more research is needed to confirm the information.
