RCAS purchases land for future development - KNBN NewsCenter1

KNBN NewsCenter1 May 13, 2021 RAPID CITY, S.D. The Rapid City Area Schools Board approved unanimously just over $1 million earlier this week to purchase land near Sheridan Lake and Dunsmore Roads, the home of a future elementary school. According to the district’s facility services manager Kumar Veluswamy, the southwest side of town has continued growth. Corral Drive and Meadowbrook have reached capacity limits and the district has been forced to transfer students out of the area. The addition of another elementary school is still years away but the district is planning ahead. “Canyon Lake Elementary School is in dire need of replacement so we will need to close that school and reboundary kids between those areas,” said Veluswamy. “We have Meadowbrook within a block and a half distance so we’ll need to reboundary between Meadowbrook, Corral Drive, Canyon lake, and this new school.”

Annual tornado drill gets SD thinking about severe weather

KNBN NewsCenter1 April 20, 2021 RAPID CITY, S.D. – As part of this week’s Severe Weather Awareness Week, the National Weather service is staging it’s annual tornado drill. Wednesday morning between 9 and 9:30 a.m., the NWS will be issuing a tornado warning for the area. They want us all to remember that it’s a drill but to also start thinking about the weeks ahead when we might be in a scenario that’s not a drill. “It gives people a minute to pause thinking, ‘What would I do right now if this was a real tornado warning’,” said Susan Sanders, Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the NWS Rapid City Office. “They’re not at home generally so they would have to think about where their shelter would be at that particular moment.”

South Dakota health officials debunk common vaccine misconceptions

KNBN NewsCenter1 Effort continues to vaccinate state s population April 20, 2021 SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakota health officials across the state come together to discuss vaccine hesitancy among residents, encouraging people to choose to get vaccinated and debunking common misconceptions for opting out. The State Department of Health and three major healthcare systems – Avera, Monument, and Sanford – say 53% of all eligible South Dakotans have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine but the state has a long way to go until the population can reach herd immunity at 70%. Hesitancy has become an increased challenge, especially as the Johnson and Johnson Vaccine distribution was paused by the FDA and CDC until they have a chance to review the six cases of blood clots linked to the single-dose vaccine. None of the cases were in South Dakota and the cases attribute for less than one in one million people.
