La Mesa finally has its community garden

La Mesa finally has its long awaited community garden, located in a spot in the hills above downtown.
After years of starts and stops in other places around the city, La Mesa Community Garden at MacArthur Park is scheduled to hold its grand opening and ceremonial first planting at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at 5080 Memorial Drive. The garden has 41 plots, including four that are ADA accessible.
The garden sits near the city’s public swimming pool next to the former site of the clubhouse for Sun Valley Golf Course, which closed in 2017. The city owns the land the golf course leased. It turned the entire 22-acre property into a park, carving out a spot for the garden. It has water-efficient irrigation, free parking and public restrooms on site. ....

National City nonprofit hosts virtual soiree
Olivewood Gardens & Learning Center celebrates its work as a leader around health equity and food access during a virtual celebration, “Seedling Soirée 2021,” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The celebration will feature a variety of activities, including: curated drink and food packages for guests to prepare at home created by Olivewood Kitchenistas, local chefs and mixologists (order by Wednesday); extended access to view the “The Kitchenistas” film and a panel featuring the filmmakers and film cast; and a silent auction and live auction, both of which are open now online at olivewoodgardens.org/seedling-soiree. Guests can tour Olivewood’s spring garden at 2525 N Ave. in National City when they come to pick up their to-go food and drink packages. Ticket packages start at $50.
