Austin-made rehab drama
Addict Named Hal gets its world premiere, streaming and in-person, at this week's Santa Barbara International Film Festival
The sun may be up, but if you're in California you can catch today's world premiere of Austin-made rehab drama
Addict Named Hal as part of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival - and even if you can't make it there, it's streaming through April 10 for badge holders.
Writer/director Lane Michael Stanley shot the autobiographically-inspired drama in Austin and Round Rock in early 2020 (read more here), with a cast and crew primarily drawn of current students and grads of the UT RTF program. Stanley completed the film in March, and it's starting its festival run.

The plan to tackle Ireland's housing crisis has failed

At a webinar event on housing last month, the chief executive of Cairn Homes, Michael Stanley, produced what he described as a “mind-blowing statistic”. It related to home ownership rates among 25 to 39-year-olds. Stanley noted that the percentage of this age cohort that owned their own homes had dropped from 22 per cent in 2011 to 16 per cent in 2016, according to the official census data, and that based on his company’s own research it was now about 12 per cent. He described the trend as “extraordinary and very worrying”.
It was an interesting fault line for the boss of one of the largest homebuilders in the State to pick up on. Home ownership has collapsed among adults of a prime working age – a reflection of surging house prices and a lost decade of wage growth since the financial crisis. Owning a property has become increasingly concentrated among older age cohorts. In 2016, 85 per cent of 65-year-olds owned their own homes, while just 14 per cent rented.

Mike Polk Jr. on Michael Stanley Day

Michael first started rockin' in bands back at Rocky River High School in the late '60s, and from there went on to become a Midwest sensation. In the early 80s, the Michael Stanley Band was a straight-up phenomenon around these here parts, at one point playing a four-night stand of sold-out shows at Blossom Music Center.
And yes, that's the same Blossom Music Center that nowadays has to put REO Speedwagon, Styx and Kansas all on the same bill just to fill up the Pavilion. There, I said it. Speedwagon burn!
Due to the unfortunate timing of my birth, I wasn't able to experience the peak of the Michael Stanley Band itself, but even for those of us who arrived a little late to the party, he was still a constant presence in our lives.

Good Morning, Kruiser Morning Briefing friends! The regular proprietor of this establishment is enjoying his last day of vacation, but we’ll continue to muddle through together in his absence, won’t we?
We all know the approved narrative: The COVID-19 virus originated in a wet market in China, a country that is not in any way responsible for the virus that originated within its borders and migrated to the rest of the world, through no fault of the Chinese, who only mean Americans well and who are not in any way culpable for the worst global pandemic in most of our lifetimes.

The Who were left without the driving force of their rhythm section, a larger-than-life drummer whose thunderous approach on the kit defined the band’s sound and changed the course of rock drumming. Even with this blow, guitarist and principal songwriter Pete Townshend announced the next day that the band “is more determined than ever to carry on.” They’d already signed deals for several projects and would soon be under contract to deliver albums to the label, the first of which would be
Face Dances, featuring new recruits Kenney Jones on drums and John “Rabbit” Bundrick on keyboards.

As you drive around Northeast Ohio, chances are you will come across a billboard that pays tribute to Michael Stanley.
The billboard has a picture of Stanley with the tribute "Forever Your Town," a nod to "My Town," one of the biggest hits of the Michael Stanley Band. MSB recorded 11 studio albums and set concert attendance records at both the Richfield Coliseum and Blossom Music Center. "My Town" and "He Can't Love You" both were Top 40 hits for the Michael Stanley Band. The band broke up in 1987, but Stanley continued to play his music to audiences for decades to come. He also would go on to host several local television shows and serve as the afternoon drive host on 98.5 WNCX for more than three decades.

Pollstar | Michael Stanley 1948 - 2021: An Appreciation

By: Holly Gleason

When the Michael Stanley Band took the stage – from their early record-setting mid-70s stands at the original Agora Ballroom or 10-night final run at the rotating stage Front Row Theater, not to mention the record-setting four-night SRO appearances at Blossom Music Center or the two nights at Richfield Coliseum that sold out faster than led Zeppelin – there was an urgency forged by the city of Cleveland’s zeitgeist. No matter how tough things got, MSB created music that swept sometimes tens of thousands of locals up in its expansive view of life in “Our Town.”
