Escapees from the city fuel country house sales across North Wales

Properties with land in the beautiful North Wales countryside are being snapped up by working from home city slickers freed from the office by the pandemic.
That’s the evidence from a rocketing property market which has been boosted not just by the stamp duty holiday but also by lockdown changes in working practices.
North Wales law firm Swayne Johnson, which has six offices across the region from Menai Bridge on Anglesey to Tattenhall, near Chester, have seen their conveyancing workload rise by 50 per cent since the first pandemic lockdown ended in July.
One of the drivers of that growth has been buyers from cities who find they can get more house – and garden - for their pound in the countryside and certainly in North Wales still be within range of offices in Manchester and Liverpool for occasional visits. ....

Trustees move to quash noise fears over pavilion's licence

ASSURANCE has been given that excessive noise and anti-social behaviour will not be permitted at a community pavilion if it is granted an alcohol licence.
The application for the new timber-framed hall on the Joan Adams Community Field in Llanfair Waterdine drew 11 objections from people living nearby, who said previous events on the field had caused significant disturbance to the community.
But trustee Andrew Beavan told a Shropshire Council licensing hearing that these issues would not be repeated now that the hall had been built.
Further concerns were voiced over road safety, the trustees’ ability to manage an alcohol licence, and potential competition with the Everest Hall. ....

Illustrating John Betjeman | Apollo Magazine

‘Deeply I loved thee, 31 West Hill!’ It was only recently, exploring my new neighbourhood in north London, that I put a facade to these words from John Betjeman’s verse autobiography,
Summoned by Bells: about halfway up one of London’s steepest streets, which runs north from Parliament Hill to Highgate village, a blue plaque on an elegant, semi-detached villa announces it as the poet’s home from 1908–17. The house, with Hampstead Heath behind it, is at the centre of the first three chapters of what Betjeman referred to (only semi-mockingly) as ‘the epic’, which charts the poet’s small triumphs and tragedies up to the age of 22. ....

House sales rocket across North Wales as buyers rush to cash in on tax break

1/1
HOUSE sales across North Wales have risen by 50 per cent on last year since the first pandemic lockdown ended in July, according to one of the region’s leading law firms.
Swayne Johnson, which has offices across North Wales and into Cheshire, has seen a dramatic increase in their property work as house hunters have looked to cash in on lower taxes on home sales.
Michael Tree, director and head of conveyancing at the firm which has a base in Tattenhall, near Chester, said that sales had plummeted in the first lockdown only to come roaring back in the second half of the year. ....
