9 & 10 News May 18, 2021 The opioid crisis is an ongoing issue nationwide, as well as in Michigan, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is reporting how they are combatting the issue. In 2019, Governor Whitmer established the Michigan Opioids Task Force under MDHHS to figure out how best to address the opioid crisis in Michigan. The task force unveiled their 2020 annual report, which detailed strategies the group is focusing on such as educating the public on the crisis, supporting those in long term recovery, and increase treatment access in prisons and jails. The report also included results from various town halls that were held by the task force to gather opinions on these strategies. ....
Michigan Opioids Task Force releases annual report on state’s response to opioid crisis Tags: The Michigan Opioids Task Force and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) released the 2020 annual report regarding the state’s response to the opioid crisis. A statewide naloxone portal helped distribute more than 100,000 kits containing the overdose reversal medication. Another initiative is starting a public media campaign focused on sharing stories from Michigan residents “who have lived experiences to share the effect of opioids.” MDHHS also worked with the Michigan Opioid Project in 2020 to launch programs in 17 hospital emergency departments to treat opioid use disorder. Bob Wheaton LANSING – Michigan is reporting its second consecutive year of decreasing opioid overdose deaths and drug overdose deaths overall – showing the progress that has been made under the state’s comprehensive efforts to combat the national epidemic. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced today that in 2019 there were 2,354 overdose deaths in Michigan, 1,768 of which were opioid-related. Overall overdose deaths declined by 9.4% from the 2,599 in 2018 – a number that is now below what was seen in 2016. Opioid-related overdose deaths decreased by 13.2% from the 2018 total of 2,036 – a greater decline than the more modest gain the previous year. However, preliminary data for January-June 2020 show 1,340 overdose deaths – up from 1,155 in those same months in 2019, an increase of 16%.
