20 things you don't know about me: Benita Zahn

I love to cook and bake but don’t ever ask me to include Jello in a recipe, or canned beets -- two foods I simply hate. Need I say more?

I met my husband on a story. I was interviewing Denise Herman, once a standout local runner who taught at Saratoga HS. The story was in advance of the Freihofer’s Run for Women. Denise was a friend and after the interview she asked me to take a moment to meet the new athletic director. I was "in between engagements" at the time. So she runs into the school and brings Bob with her and I think, "He can wear a pair of pants." But he was so settled I figured he had a wife and 2 kids at home, despite not wearing a wedding ring. Yeah, reporters notice these things. By Exit 10, I’d put him out of mind. Denise called me a few weeks later and said Bob would like my number. He called and we started dating. When I asked him why he called, some months into our romance, he said “Denise said you wanted me to call.” Clearly she’d spent too much time around 13-year-old girls. That was 21 years ago. Thanks Denise!

House of the Week: Tudor in Albany

House of the Week: Tudor in Albany

This week's house is a brick Tudor-style home two blocks from Buckingham Pond, at 77 Brookline Ave., Albany.
It was built in 1933 and has 2,000 square feet of living space. The exterior has half-cladding and stucco on the upper story and brick below, and a steep slate roof that adds to its fairy-tale look. The style carries through inside with diamond-shaped muntins on the windows, doorways with cathedral arches and exposed beams in the living room bearing decorative carving.

Timeline: A look back at the COVID-19 pandemic in Laredo, one year later

Timeline: A look back at the COVID-19 pandemic in Laredo, one year later

One year later, Laredo has finally started to see the light of the end of the tunnel as it comes to the coronavirus pandemic.
March 16 marked the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, and since that fateful day, Laredoans have experienced a year that could never have been imagined. Schools, parks and nonessential businesses were shuttered, and friends and families were forced to socially distance in respect to a deadly virus whose effects were not truly known at the time.
While much more is known about its spread and vaccines have begun to make their way into the arms of Laredoans, the physical and psychological effects of the virus and the resulting pandemic will be felt for many months, maybe years, into the future.

Women who broke barriers from the year you were born
The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1920 to give women the right to vote. Since then, women have been elected to government roles in increasing numbers, culminating in 2021 with the first woman sworn in as vice president of the United States.
Politics isn't the only field where women have broken through barriers, of course. In 1944, Ann Baumgartner Carl became the first female test pilot. In 1953, aviator Jacqueline Cochran was the first woman to break the sound barrier. And in 1999, Lt. Col. Eileen Collins became the first woman astronaut to pilot and command a NASA space shuttle mission. Women also have been appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court and directed big-budget, award-winning Hollywood films.

Math and munchies are uniting for another weekend holiday in Seattle, because this March 14, we're celebrating National Pi Day.
Also known by the Greek letter "π," the constant value frequented in much of our high school math homework, 3.14, was first calculated by Archimedes of Syracuse (287-212 BC).
Thousands of years later and it's still frequented, even for a sweet national holiday and pop culture phenomenon.

While we celebrate mathematicians abound today, it's more fun to celebrate with a slice of pie as well.
