Indian stock market benchmarks the Sensex and the Nifty 50 has been volatile of late. The India VIX index, which measures volatility in the Indian stock market, has surged nearly 35 per cent so far in May, following a meagre 0.30 per cent rise in April and a significant 18 per cent fall in March
Stock market today: Sensex closed with a loss of 609 points, or 0.82 per cent, at 73,730.16 while the Nifty 50 settled at 22,419.95, down 150 points, or 0.67 per cent.
Sensex rises: Indian stock market hit all-time highs with Sensex crossing 75,000 and Nifty 50 breaching 22,750. The BSE Midcap index also reached a record high. Overall market capitalisation surpassed ₹402 lakh crore.
Stock market today: Nifty 50 closed flat at 22,335.70 while the Sensex ended the day at 73,667.96.
Mid-and small-cap stocks in India faced significant declines, with Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices dropping over 2%. PSU banking stocks also witnessing notable selling pressure. Nifty Media and Realty were among worst performers.
