CCU approves petition to increase power bills by at least $57

The average power bill could increase by $57 per month, starting August, because of a petition approved Tuesday evening by the Consolidated Commission on Utilities. The proposed increase still needs to be considered and approved by the Public Utilities Commission, sometime in July.
The Guam Power Authority needs to increase the current fuel surcharge, which is 11 cents per kilowatt-hour, otherwise it won’t be able to afford to buy more fuel every month, agency General Manager John Benavente told the CCU Tuesday.
The problem is rising fuel costs, he said. A barrel of residual fuel oil, which is used by the island’s main power plants, cost as little as $30 last year, he said. It is projected to increase to about $77 per barrel.  That means each monthly shipment of oil from Singapore, which must be paid in advance, will cost about $17 million, he said, and could go a ....
