May 14, 2021 By Shelley Byrne The main span of a new bridge over the Ohio River was built on the riverbank and recently floated in by barge before being lifted into place as part of a new construction technique. On April 26, Excell Marine, working with Dutch subcontractor Mammoet, moved the 830-foot bridge span using two tandem barges and towboats on each end, said Mike Witherow, District 6 construction engineer for the West Virginia Department of Highways. “They were able to construct the arch fairly easily from the land, and then once they assembled the arch they were able to float a barge under each end of the assembly system in the yard,” he said. ....

(Photo by Scott McCloskey) WHEELING West Virginia State Highway Engineer Alan Reed was quite impressed while making a stop in Wheeling on Wednesday for an inspection tour of various sections of the I-70 Bridges Project, including the eastbound side of the Fulton Bridge which is currently under construction. The nearly three-year, $215 million highway project the largest single highway project in West Virginia in terms of both scope and cost is in its second phase with the closure of the eastbound side of the Fulton Bridge. A total of 26 bridges are being fully renovated or replaced as part of the project, with one of those bridges being in Ohio. ....

Motorists traveling Interstate 70 near the West Virginia Welcome Center in Ohio County can expect road resurfacing repairs to begin by next week near where the Tunnel Ridge mining company performed longwall mining beneath the area just a few months ago. According to West Virginia Division of Highways Area Engineer Mike Witherow, the road resurfacing work has been delayed slightly because of the recent wave of rainy weather and the resurfacing work is “weather dependent.” ....
