historic term with a new member and pivotal cases. just justice brown jackson, the first black woman, will hear her first cases. we're joined live from the supreme court. what will be the top priority as this new term begins? >> reporter: the justices are back at it now with this new member, justice jackson, the first black woman, and right away she's going to have to deal with cases that have to deal with the issue of race. there's a big voting right act case, section 2, that's part of the law that bars rules that discriminate on the basis of race. the case has to do with maps out of alabama. a lower court said the maps
to die by nitrogen hypoxia, officials had none of that paperwork. there's never been an execution like that carried out in alabama or the u.s. officials say they aren't prepared to implement that protocol, that extensive training would be needed. there is a divide over this methods of execution with proponents saying it could be easier and more humane. opponents saying it is still untested, unproven and just too soon. >> a controversial case. alexandra field in new york, thank you for that reporting. a reversal from the new british government this morning as it grapples with turbulence in the market. how it affects the united states. and 9 foreign nanationals he been detained during protests in iran. how iranian leaders are responding. moving his money into his investment account
could be in the position of overturning precedent like it did last term. there's also a couple of big cases having to do with lgbtq rights, another voting rights case. it's a really significant term. it comes as public opinion of the court is plummeting. and it's all going to come for the first term of justice jackson, a significant docket. >> big year ahead. thank you so much. >> thank you. this morning the state of alabama is working to reschedule the execution of a convicted murderer that the supreme court had cleared to proceed. allen eugene miller was scheduled to be executed by lethal injection in september but it was halted at the last minute. joining us is alexandra field, what can you tell us about what ruling by the supreme court in this miller case? >> reporter: good morning. look the supreme court's ruling gave the green light to alabama
diluted black voting power. supporters of voting rights are worried because this court back in 2013, in an opinion written by chief justice john roberts gutted a separate section of the law. so that is at issue now. and they're worried they're going to take aim now at section 2. >> among the major cases that the supreme court is going to be hearing early on in this term is that challenge to affirmative action at harvard and the university of north carolina. what do we expect there? >> reporter: absolutely. another case having to do with race. because court precedent allows colleges and universities to take race into consideration as one factor in admissions. but now a conservative group is looking at the programs at harvard, university of north carolina and it says it's asking the supreme court to overturn that precedent to say that race shouldn't be considered at all. again, this conservative court

being compromised by russia given your background and having been a prosecutor and involved in these things and having lived and -- lived in and visited the former soviet union. it does sort of feel like you're either star crossed or district end for this, doesn't it? >> well, it did feel at times like certain parts of my life prepared me for what was to come in very unexpected ways. i never thought i would see another illustration of russian trade craft at work like i did in the miller case. but the president in so many ways resembled a kind of target miller was. he was a philanderer. he had poor morals and a lack of ethics. he had the same greed except on a far greater scale than million early. unlike miller where the russians could, you know, dangle gold, donald trump was actively pursuing this very lucrative project in moscow. the russians didn't need to dangle anything. he was pursuing it proactively

it was an incredibly polarizing event along race lines. and aside from yesterday, it doesn't seem like this is playing out in a similarly polarizing way. >> i think you're right, actually. i think this is a case that it looks so clear to people that this is an injustice. that is quite a relief to me, anyway, that we can all sort of agree that this kid should not have died and this person should be held responsible. i think that that crosses certain political barriers. the vast majority of the people that you can visualize are african american. but if you look closely, these are all races. it's all genders that are out there and protesting saying trayvon is my son. he could be anybody's son. >> it's an interesting case.
one of the things we had last time was a former offender who included child soldiers, done horrible things. a horrible juvenile history. a lot of people who turn their lives around and some of them the most effective advocates for the risks that we have in our society. you make a case for flogging. i wonder if it's on unusual punishment factors in to how expansively we can think about what we should be doing? >> the point of what i'd like to say is i'm not actually pro flogging, i'm pro-choice.
legislatures are doing, it's a lay-up for the state legislature to take a crime that is absolutely unquestionably heinous. i will tell you particularly in the miller case, they are really hard to reed. >> the problem that we've had is bad crimes being turned into bad policy. and that's incarceration and stand your ground laws, make my day laws and all of these appeals are the product of politics of fear and anger.
