Common Council has passed updates to its plan to improve traffic safety on University Avenue near the Millidge Avenue intersection. The major elements of the inital plan, including a road diet that will turn two lanes east of the intersection into dedicated bike lanes, are still in place. Two signalized crosswalks will also be added at Bloom Street and Varsity Street near the Regional Hospital, and a transit shelter will be moved to prevent congestion. The final plan includes reducing the speed limit from 60 kilometers per hour to 50, and will see the turning lane into the busy nearby Tim Horton’s and Wendys parking lot extended by removing a portion of the centre median. ....
Saint John Common Council is planning to put University Avenue on a road diet. At Monday’s meeting, council approved the 2021 Traffic Safety Improvement Projects, which includes a plan to reduce University Avenue from four lanes of traffic to two in favour of making more space for cyclists. The plan would also see a bus shelter pushed further down the street to reduce traffic congestion near the Millidge Avenue intersection, and signalized crosswalks at Bloom Street and Varsity Street. Most councillors gushed about the plan, and its focus on safety improvement and active transportation. “This is a good news story. This shows how progressive the city has become,” said Councillor John MacKenzie. ....

(Photo by Tamara Steele) The Saputo processing plant in Saint John’s north end will close for good at the end of this month. The closure of the former Baxter Dairies plant was announced in February 2020 but the decision was potentially lost in the onslaught of pandemic information that followed in March. A total of 65 workers will lose their jobs as of January 31st. A company news release originally pegged the job losses at 199, but an email from the company this week said the first number was “incorrectly relayed due to an administrative error.” ....
