The former minister of justice calls an attempt to have the RCMP investigate whether he played a role in the decision to charge former RNC officer Joe Smyth with obstruction of justice after he stopped a motorcycle, laughable and beyond ridiculous.
Smyth fatally shot Don Dunphy in Mitchell’s Brook in 2015 but was never charged with any offence.
A leaked document references text communications of former minister Sherry Gambin Walsh and Acting RNC Inspector Paul Didham that were uncovered in an investigation into information being shared between the two.
Smyth has asked the RCMP to investigate.
RNC Chief Joe Boland rejects any contention that public officials exert influence over officers.

The plot thickens involving contact between the chief of police and the government around promotions within the RNC, with another minister being accused of interfering with the process.
RCMP documents state that Minister Bernard Davis called RNC Chief Joe Boland in early March asking how the investigation was going into allegations that Minister Sherry Gambin-Walsh leaked information about promotions.
Davis admits he did call Boland but that it was only to see how his friend was making out because he had learned through the media that the chief was going through a hard time with the force.
Davis also insisted he didn’t know anything about the Gambin-Walsh investigation until a few weeks later when he again found out through the media.
