Columbia's RSF starts community conversations with movies


For many, the past year and a half has revealed what we can t live without, the parts of life we never want to take for granted again.
For the staff of Ragtag Film Society, those must-haves start with people sharing scenes by the light of a movie screen. But they certainly don t end there.
RFS which encompasses Ragtag Cinema and the True/False Film Fest values the variety and quality of conversations which start in a theater, but last long after the credits roll. 
The desire to foster many more of these conversations is driving RFS to participate in this year s A Community Thrives initiative, a crowdfunding program from Gannett, the Tribune s parent company.   ....

Nonprofits kick off fundraising for 'A Community Thrives' program

The $2.3 million initiative is sponsored by Gannett, The Rolla Daily News parent company, and is marking its fifth year supporting groups that address social issues.
Last month, organizations applied to raise money for specific projects and will first raise money on their own through crowdfunding campaigns. Then, they will be eligible for one of 15 national grants of up to $100,000.
“A Community Thrives is an opportunity for Gannett to raise up local ideas and community needs by providing nonprofit organizations with visibility, grants and exposure to new donors through the unique power of the USA TODAY and USA TODAY Network platforms,” said Sue Madden, director of the Gannett Foundation. ....
