Now, Kolkata-based shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has bagged the contract to build a sea-going ferry for Guyana that may also sail to Suriname with passengers and vehicles. The Guyana-Suriname ferry is quite well known among people who travel to the Carribean. This is the first time that an Indian shipyard has bagged such a contract. “GRSE is the only shipyard in the country to have built 106 ships for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. It is also the only shipyard to have delivered a warship to Mauritius. Now, a lot of stress is being paid on exports and the order for the ferry in Guyana was bagged after the shipyard participated in a global tender. ....
Demerara/Berbice hit by series of service interruptions December 24, 2020 Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) in a release yesterday reported on a number of incidents that resulted in service interruptions in the Demerara and Berbice areas. According to the utility, at 01:50 hrs yesterday morning, service from Success to Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, was interrupted when a feeder from the GPL Good Hope Substation tripped due to a defective transformer. However, remedial work commenced immediately to replace the transformer and power was fully restored at approximately 05:56 hrs. On Monday, December 21, at approximately 01: 23 hrs, the L17 Transmission Line, which links GPL’s Good Hope and Colombia Substations tripped, affecting service to customers from Victoria, East Coast Demerara to Moleson Creek, Berbice. Guyana flag was in the correct place Dear Editor, It was with great pleasure that I recently saw a report and pictures in the print media in relation to the historic signing of the Open Skies – Air Services Agreement between Guyana and Suriname. I was delighted to note that the flag of Guyana was positioned in its rightful place, that is to say it was on the right of the flag of our eastern neighbour. This was reflected in photographs taken in and out of the Pegasus Hotel. It was a vast contrast with what took place a few months ago at Moleson Creek during a ceremony for the proposed construction of the Guyana-Suriname River Bridge across the Corentyne River, where images emerged showing the Golden Arrowhead incorrectly flying on the left of the flag of Suriname which I alluded to in a letter to the editor. ....
