Child care providers in Detroit are scrambling as federal relief dollars that have been supporting their centers for the last few years are set to dry up at the end of September.
Workers from across the state united with local families and supporters to bring awareness to low-wage jobs, staff shortages and access to affordable programs.
This round of grants comes from federal COVID relief funds and totals $365 million. Another $365 million was awarded in the fall, to more than 5,800 providers.
Low pay is one reason Detroit is considered a ‘child care desert,’ and the situation is getting worse: 200 home providers went out of business in the past 12 months.
