Court orders state to expedite investigations into Nicholas Opiyo case January 12, 2021 Nicholas Opiyo in court on Monday The Anti-Corruption court has tasked the directorate of public prosecution (DPP) to expedite investigations in the case where human rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo is accused of money laundering. State attorney, Steven Ariong on Monday informed court that investigations were incomplete and needed more time to finalise them. Opiyo’s lawyer David Mpanga asked court to direct the DPP to expedite the investigations to enable his client to regain his freedom. Mpanga also told the court that some of the current bail conditions are not favourable to Opiyo especially on the condition of reporting to court registrar twice in a month. ....

Lawyer Nicholas Opiyo granted Shs 15m cash bail December 31, 2020 Nicholas Opiyo appearing in court via video link from Kitalya prison Renowned human rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo has been granted a Shs 15 million cash bail after spending more than a week in custody. Opiyo, the executive director of Chapter Four Uganda, a human rights organization was arrested last week on Tuesday with two others from a restaurant in Kamwokya in Kampala on allegations of money laundering. The arrest was in relation to a sum of $340,000 (Shs 1.2 billion) which was channelled through an account in Absa bank. Prosecution alleges that Opiyo received $340,000 through Chapter Four Uganda on October 8, at a branch of Absa bank in Kampala, well knowing that the funds were proceeds of crime. ....
