Dan McCullough column: Two men in uniform, working for the Army
— Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President, five-star general. I have an old sepia photograph of my father in his military uniform. Orphaned as a baby, he was raised by his uncle Tom, who was a brewery blacksmith and farrier in Providence. After spending all those boyhood hours with horses, I guess it made sense that when he joined the military, he would lean toward the cavalry. He was stationed at the Armory of Mounted Command in the Rhode Island capital; World War I had ended, so he never saw combat. He seldom spoke of his experiences, but he was a uniformed soldier.
