The rise of omicron has- reminded us again, if we need to be reminded, that if there are swathesl of unvaccinated populations, this gives chances for - the virus to mutate, - so just when we were settling comfortably, thinking - we could celebrate the end of the year, people are considering lockdowns again and the virus is back with us. will we get a third chance? i m not sure. it sometimes comes in threes. yet the science was there. nothing was secret about it. we knew what we had to do, but people s instinct - is to protect themselves. you can t blame people, but. it is an interesting challenge i suspect we will be talking about a year from now. let s move on and talk about the united states, and in particular, the democratic challenge. the year began with donald trump s defeat in the november 2020 presidential election. ....

Kill you, you should do everything possible to prevent it from infecting you. so what do you say to those doctors who suggest this signals at least to them the beginning of the end of a pandemic? are you saying that s too optimistic of a view? i ve worked with viruses for many decades and i would always say never underestimate a virus, especially a virus such as sars-cov-2 which has shown us an ability to mutate rapidly, mutate extensively, and change the game repeatedly. so every time we have sort of declared victory or freedom or independence and taken off the mask and relaxed our social behaviors, the virus has outsmarted us and come back even stronger. we need to buckle down now. everyone needs to wear an n95 mask when they leave the house. everyone should have that booster shot. we need to kick up our game. we need to use tests, make sure if you re positive, you don t enter a place where there are ....

Cases. so where are we right now? well, this virus, the coronavirus, has taught us to be humble. every time we think that we have a handle on it and that things will get better, it throws us another curve ball. so we re definitely in a different place than we were a year ago just as you said with the vaccines and the antivirals and other things in the pipeline and much of the population vaccinated. but we don t have enough people vaccinated. and omicron is very infectious, much more so than other variants. what i worry about most is what is next. this virus will continue to mutate. so once we re past omicron, hopefully in the next few week, there will be another one. and then perhaps another one. so we need to really prepare ourselves for this for the long haul. before we let you go, i only have a few seconds left but, but let s talk about those antiviral treatments because the fda cleared a second one from merck. how much of these treatments ....

That that reality- has changed for me. many of us hoped that 2021 would be the year that we put coronavirus behind us. here in london, life did get back to something closer to normal, but we also learned that covid is a global problem and it requires a global response. the successful roll out of vaccines in the rich world left poorer countries vulnerable, and it gave the virus ample opportunity to mutate. science gave us the vaccine, but it didn t give us vaccine equity. when we made this plan of a fair allocation and equitable distribution, we knew there ll be limited supplies, and so we started prioritising the groups who should get it first. i mean, one group are clearly the health workers and frontline workers. you know, we ve seen they were disproportionately affected by this pandemic. they need to be protected so they can take care ....
